Recently, a reader reached out and asked if I had any division practice sheets similar to my multiplication practice sheets. I didn’t, but that was easily remedied! Recently, I’ve been thinking about how to market and promote a new, non-education endeavour and it has left me feeling unmotivated. I hate promoting. However, I love sharing. It felt good to put these pages together and create something that will be immediately useful to people.

Like my multiplication sheets, these division practice sheets are focused on helping kids memorize their times tables. These are NOT practice sheets for long division (though if anyone would like something along those lines, let me know)! These sheets are simply the inverse of the multiplication ones. They will help children see the connection between mutliplication and division.

When I started putting them together I had a moment of uncertainty where I was considering which form to write the division problem. Should I use the division symbol, write it as a fraction, or put the number inside the house like we do with long division? Eventually, I opted for all 3! It’s important for kids to know that even though they look different, all three of these forms are representing division!

Like my multiplication sheets, these practice pages focus on one number at a time, but then also have review pages up to and including that number. I definitely recommend going through the multiplication sheets first, but then when you want to start division, I hope this format helps your child not feel too overwhelmed as they build up their skills.

However, sometimes I don’t have time to play games. Sometimes, I just want my kid to practice his multiplication tables without turning it into a big thing. I made these free printable multiplication practice sheets to serve that purpose, for those days when I just want some quick and easy review.

The main reason why I made these myself was because I wanted sheets that could focus on learning the times tables for one number at a time. There is one sheet for each number that focuses on JUST that times table. However, there are then practice sheets that focus on practicing ALL of the times tables up to and including that number. (The higher the number, the more practice sheets are included to make sure the review is thorough.)

I know that there can be pitfalls with using star charts. However, I can’t help but feel that they deserve a place in my parenting toolbox. After all, even though they have a bad rap, bribes can be really effective in the moment. Do I care if my son never chooses to study his multiplication facts on his own? Not really, as long as he knows them.

There’s another reason why I don’t really mind bribing my son to memorize his multiplication tables. I bribe myself all the time. I don’t know how I would have gotten through college without bribing myself to sit down and get my work done so that I could watch a rerun of Friends before dinner. Even though I know it’s a bad habit, I still reward myself with candy for completing tasks I really dread.

My son can’t help the fact that he’s just a kid. Hopefully when he’s older, he’ll learn to self-motivate. For now, I don’t see the harm in giving him a little help. He nees to memorize the multiplication tables. I don’t want it to be a huge ordeal. I want him to WANT to learn them without complaining, whining, or otherwise driving me crazy. Is that too much to ask?

I made these multiplication star charts so that he could keep track of what he already knew and what he still needed to learn. I also chose rewards that I could live with that I thought would motivate him. Of course, the satisfaction of a job well done SHOULD be all that’s needed. However, if my son needs a little boost, I wrote in rewards of candy, board game, video game, ice cream, tv show, make cookies, and a grand prize of $5. He can check off the rewards as he redeems them.

Another feature of these star charts is a section called “On Probation.” This is in case my son shows me one day that he knows a fact, so earns a star, but then later fails to recall that fact when we’re reviewing. If he does forget something he’s already memorized, I plan to put that fact on a post-it note in the bottom section. Before he redeems any rewards, I want there to be nothing in this probation area.

Anyway, will my child be ruined for life for having used a star chart? I’m not going to lie. I have no idea. It’s a distinct possibility. Somehow, though, I seriously doubt it. We’re going to give it a shot.

When I made this chart 3 days ago, all he knew were his ones and tens. He couldn’t even do his twos without stopping to think. After 1 day, he was able to say all his doubles superfast. After 2 days, he now has 3×1 through 3×6 memorized. He’s using my interactive multiplication flashcards to “study,” though you could also just write the problems on index cards.

Another fun activity we’re doing to help him memorize his multiplication facts is playing a game using my free printable, generic game board and 2 blank dice. To help him practice his upper 3 facts, I made one specially marked dice (notice the blue squares) with 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1 on the sides. The other dice had 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12. We took turns rolling the 2 dice and multiplying those numbers together. If we got the answer right, we moved our game piece forward the number inside the blue square. To make it fair since he was playing a grown up, even if he got the answer wrong, I let him try again until he got the right answer and got to move. That way he was enthusiastic to play and practicing his times tables at the same time.

For the upper tables, I plan to use Times Tales. I actually purchased this when he was in first grade and it seemed to really help him. However, at the time I thought there were more important math concepts he should tackle before his multiplication tables, so we shelved it. I think it’s time we brought it back out.

Recommended Age Range: Elementary
Time Required: ~5 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Cost: Free printable. Optional: A couple dollars for foil stars (with a bunch left over)

Materials:

Paper for printing multiplication star charts.

Foil Stars (optional: could also just put checks or draw happy faces)

Instructions:

First, print the multiplication star charts.

Next fill out the rewards. You could use the same reward for each row or choose something different. For mine, I used a combination of food treats (such as candy and ice cream), media usage (like watching tv and video games), and activities with a parent (like playing a board game or cooking). When my son completes the entire chart, I plan to give him $5 to spend on a toy. Do whatever you feel comfortable with!

In case you’re interested, I also made sight word star charts and alphabet star charts for my younger kids.

Recently, I had the brilliant idea that I was going to make my 7 year old some multiplication flashcards. He started learning his times tables recently in the adaptive online math program he uses. (Review to come…I like it, but haven’t decided how much.) However, about 3 colorful homemade cards in, I discovered that my markers were starting to dry out. If there’s one thing I can not abide, it’s subpar office supplies. I also realized that making these cards by hand was going to take nothing short of eternity.

In order to save myself some time and frustration, I decided to go the digital route and made my son these free printable interactive multiplication cards instead. I figured if I was going to take the time to print and laminate cards, I should make them a little more fun than standard store bought cards, so I made some interactive options which my son seems to enjoy.

Generally speaking, I’m not a big fan of using flashcards with little kids. (Though I am a fan of Montessori-inspired matching games.) However, I’ve come to a point in the education of my oldest where I’ve realized there are just certain things that he’s going to HAVE to memorize.

I’ll still try to make multiplication fun. For example, he really likes Times Tales. We also play multiplication games once in awhile. One fun, free game is How Close to 100? from YouCubed. My son LOVES that one.

However, these multiplication cards are great for quick review and assessment. By going through a small stack, like 3’s or 4’s, he and I can quickly determine which ones he has down and which ones he’s struggling with. That way we know where to focus our memorization efforts.

One way to make them a little more interactive and fun is to use mini post-it notes to cover up the answer. That way when my son is using them on his own, if he doesn’t know the answer, he can flip it over and look at the array of dots to try and jog his memory before checking the answer.

Since I’ve laminated my cards, another interactive option is to cover up the answer with a dry erase marker.

That way he can wipe off the ink with a tissue to see if he got the answer right. Multiplication almost as fun as a lottery scratcher ticket!

Supplies & Tools:

Laminator

Scissors

Instructions:

First, print the printing interactive multiplication cards printable.

Cut out the borders of all the pages.

Fold all the pages in half so that the two sides can be glued together to make double-sided flashcards.

Glue both sides of all the pages together.

Cut the cards apart.

Laminate them if desired (necessary for the dry-erase interactive option).

Cut them out leaving a small border around each card in case the glue doesn’t hold.

If you would like to make them interactive, you can use post it notes to hide the answer. I had some 3/4″ x 2″ post-its lying around, so I folded them almost in half to make flaps about the right size. You could also cut these in half widthwise.

You could also cover up the answer with a black dry-erase marker and let the child wipe-off the ink.

So far my son has only learned his 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. When we review a stack, I tell him we’re playing a game. If he gets the right answer, he gets to keep the card. If he misses any, I get those cards (then we do those ones again). So far he’s never lost. The last time we “played” using the stack of 3’s, I only got one card (3 times 9 is not 28). When he was done, I placed my “stack” of one card next to his pile of 9 cards and said, “I think I won.” He thought that was funny. He’s only 7 and I know he probably won’t enjoy my sense of humor forever, but it’s nice to see him smiling and laughing while he works on memorizing math facts.
