It’s hard to believe I’ve been creating and sharing resources for so long, but I shared these presidential election cards for the first time EIGHT years ago! At the time, my oldest was only 6. The next time I do this, he will be able to vote! The election cards themselves are the exact same as the updated version from 4 years ago. If you still have those, you won’t need to make them again. However, each time I update these cards, I make a bonus page to go with the current elections presidential nominees. If you are interested, you can also download a free 2024 U.S. Presidential Election lap book here.

This 2024 set of presidential election cards features the following 20 vocabulary words and 4 candidates:

election

president

vice president

campaign

electoral college

debate

popular vote

incumbent

caucus

ballot

democracy

inauguration

executive branch

swing state

veto

political party

Republican Party

Democratic Party

Libertarian Party

Green Party

Donald Trump

Kamala Harris

Chase Oliver

Jill Stein

These cards are actually inspired by Montessori education, meaning that in addition to the control cards shown above, they also come as split cards used for matching. Younger kids can match just the pictures to the names or words. Slightly older kids can match the pictures to the name or key word plus description. The oldest kids can math the name or key word to the description or try to match all 3 parts. Once kids have done the matching, they can use the control cards to see if they are right, making the activity self-correcting if you want it to be.

Another thing I love about Montessori-inspired multi-part cards is that they can be used for a number of games. The cards which contain on the information can be used as clue cards. You can use any board game (like Candyland or Chutes & Ladders) and some dice to race to the finish by just drawing a clue card for each turn and only rolling if you can correctly name the word associated with the clue card. If you don’t have a game board, you are welcome to print out my free generic game board.

Another way to play games with these cards is to do a memory style matching game. Simply choose two types of cards like picture and full information or word and clue. Then lay them out in a grid and take turns trying to make matches. I recommend not starting out with the full set of 24 cards. Start with a smaller subset and then work your way up.

Personally, I recommend laminating the cards for durability, but if you only plan to use them for a couple days, you could leave them as just paper. Printing on cardstock is also an option.

Recommended Age Range: Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School
Time Required: ~30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Cost: Free printable, less than $3 to laminate

Four years ago, I created Montessori-inspired, multi-part U.S. presidential election cards and a lap book to go with it. I’ve had several inquiries about whether or not I would be updating my material for the 2020 election. The free printable cards on this page are nearly identical to my original set, with a couple minor changes. The presidential nominee cards also on this page have been completely redone. My updated lap book featuring the 2020 candidates can be found here.

I love Montessori-style cards. This might be surprising as I don’t seem like the type that would want my kids using flashcards. I like my kids to spend most of their days playing, getting dirty, creating things, and experiencing life to its fullest. What I love about these Montessori-inspired cards is that they are an efficient, hands-on way to learn.

After reviewing the information in the cards together, kids can test their own knowledge. The can match the picture to the full information cards or simply the word or name to its associated picture and/or definition. The control cards contain all the information in one place, so kids can check their answers to see if they matched correctly. One Montessori school that uses my cards told me they put the control cards on a loose leaf ring.

While I have a number of sets of Montessori-inspired cards, this 2020 U.S. presidential election card set features the following 20 words and 4 candidates:

democracy

president

vice president

election

campaign

debate

caucus

ballot

political party

republican party

democratic party

libertarian party

green party

swing state

electoral college

popular vote

inauguration

executive branch

incumbent

veto

Donald Trump

Joe Biden

Jo Jorgensen

Howie Hawkins

I really thought Ancient Greece with all its culture and refinement was going to be my favorite part of Ancient History, but there’s something compelling about these Romans. I went through a telenovela phase in grad school. (Don’t ask.) The lives of these historical figures of Ancient Rome are even more fantastic and unbelievable.

As I read their stories, I keep thinking I should make some popcorn. The beautiful, ruthless Agrippina, sister of the insane tyrant, Caligula, possibly murders her husband and is then murdered by her son, Nero?! Tiberius is the stepson, adopted son, AND son-in-law of Augustus? (Wrap your head around that one.) It’s hard to believe that these people actually lived at all, not to mention a couple thousand years ago.

This free, printable, Montessori-inspired set of cards features 28 of the most famous Ancient Romans. Included in this set are:

Tarquin the Proud

Cincinnatus

Scipio

Gaius Marius

Crassus

Pompey the Great

Cicero

Julius Caesar

Brutus

Mark Antony

Virgil

Horace

Augustus

Tiberius

Caligula

Agrippina the Younger

Nero

Trajan

Hadrian

Marcus Aurelius

Commodus

Maximian

Constantine the Great

Diocletian

Theodosius I

Stilicho

Odoacer

Justinian I

Because I love the idea of Montessori-style split cards, there are 2 sets of matching cards for each figure, plus a complete set of control cards. The control cards contain all the information related to the figure (picture + name + biographical info). The split cards allow kids to practice remembering the information by giving them the option of matching the picture to the name to the biographical info. They can be used for independent study or to play a memory-style matching game.

To study these Ancient Romans, I recommend using any of a number of different resources. (You definitely don’t need them all!) With my first grader, I like to use Story of the World: Ancient Times. However, we also own The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History and the The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. I like to look through these as well when I make the cards to make sure I’m not missing anyone really important.

Also, if you are using my free, printable blank world history timeline, I made some Ancient Roman labels that you can add to your timeline. (You are of course welcome to use them on any timeline…it doesn’t have to be the one I made!)

My one year project to learn ancient history is turning into more like a 3 year project. Such is life with little kids. Don’t worry though. Anyone that knows me knows that I always finish what I start. (Except that afghan I started crocheting 15 years ago…that I seriously need to give up on.) Our journey through Ancient History continues with Rome.

I made these definition cards so that even the youngest students can get a handle on this era of history. These Montessori-inspired cards feature 16 vocabulary words relevant to Ancient Rome. Control cards provide all the information in one place. Split cards can be matched for independent study or in a multi-player matching game.

The cards cover the following vocabulary words:

Tiber

Romulus & Remus

plebian

patrician

aqueduct

centurion

gladiators

Testudo formation

senate

forum

tunic

toga

villa

fasces

barbarians

Roman numerals

One of my main goals in presenting information like this to my young children is to give them mental “hooks” for learning even more information when they’re older. They may not remember names or dates, but by remembering some of these terms they will have a place in their brain to “hang” new information when they encounter it in the future.

One of my favorite ways to study ancient history with my kids is to listen to the audiobook Story of the World: Ancient Times. I like to have it playing while my kids color. My oldest, 7 years, will ask to hear certain sections again and again. One of his favorite parts in Ancient Rome is the chapter on the life of a gladiator.

For someone who didn’t like history at all when I was in school, I’m really enjoying learning about history as an adult. As I make these cards, I re-learn tons of information I’ve forgotten and even more information I probably never knew in the first place. Ancient Rome doesn’t disappoint. Even as I post these definition cards, I’m simultaneously working on cards for the most important historical figures of Ancient Rome. Their lives are fascinating!
Laminate them using thermal laminating pouches (optional, could also use contact paper or not laminate them at all).

Cut them out.

To use these cards, I would first read a little about Ancient Rome using any of a number of wonderful resources. For my young kids, I like to use the book Everyday Life in the Ancient World. Then I show the kids a few of the control cards that directly pertain to whatever we just read. After that, I take piles of split cards featuring the same words and pictures. I make it into a game and let them match the pictures to the words. I leave the control cards out so that they can check their work or figure things out on their own if they get stuck. In the future, once they are more familiar with the words, they won’t even need to look at the control cards while they are making their pairs.

My oldest child has been very interested in dinosaurs since he was a toddler. Even though he’s going on 7, whenever I ask him if there’s anything he’d like to learn more about, “dinosaurs” is always at the top of his list. Over a year ago, I made these free dinosaur cards and lapbook to support his enthusiasm for the subject. Ever since, I’ve been wanting to make some more paleontology-themed material, but I just never got around to it.

Recently I was reading the book Fly Guy Presents: Dinosaurs with my 1st grader. He’s a big fan of the Fly Guy easy reader series, but we were unfamiliar with the “Fly Guy Presents” non-fiction series. We’ll definitely be checking out more. The dinosaur book was perfect for his level of understanding and the inspiration for these Montessori-inspired multi-part cards.

The 12 paleontology cards in this set are almost entirely from this book. The only one I added was “ammonite” since my son has an ammonite fossil. To use them, your child can match the split cards for an independent study activity or kids can get into groups for a memory style matching game. The control cards contain all the information in one place and can be used to check that their pairs are correct.

When my oldest child turned 5, I ordered him a year long subscription to Little Passports World Edition which is meant for 6 to 10 year olds. It sounded like such an amazing idea, I couldn’t wait until he was 6. (I have a problem with delayed gratification.) It really is a wonderful program for learning geography and about other cultures, but since he was too young to read, he couldn’t do some of the activities and therefore didn’t get the full experience. To make the most of his monthly package, I decided to supplement with picture books, movies, and other activities, like learning some of the language or eating ethnic foods from that region. The first country package that we received was about Brazil.

Even if you don’t have a Little Passports subscription, there are lots of great ways to learn about the country. Our favorite picture books were Brazil ABCs and The Great Kapok Tree. My son was in kindergarten at the time, but I feel they are good books for younger and older children as well. Another great book about the rainforest and the people who live in it appropriate for slightly older children is The Shaman’s Apprentice. All of these books were available through our library system.

We also were able to rent the kid’s movie, Rio, from our library, which we all enjoyed. It features many of the terms featured in these cards such the Rio Carnival, Christ the Redeemer, and the Amazon Rainforest. (We still haven’t seen Rio 2, but I’ve heard that it’s a fun kid’s movie as well.) To take the Brazil experience even farther, you could watch a capoeira video on YouTube, try listening to some samba music on Pandora, or make a recipe for feijoda.

Lastly, if you really want to make sure your kids retain something about Brazil, you could try using these Montessori-inspired Brazil cards featuring 20 terms related to Brazil. I *meant* to get these cards up before the Summer Olympics, but, you know, life.

These informational cards feature the following terms:

Brazil

Flag of Brazil

Christ the Redeemer

Copacabana

Monumental Axis

National Library of Brazil

Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge

Ibirapuera Park

Maracanã Stadium

Rio Carnival

Amazon Rainforest

Amazon River

pantanal

sertao

Igauza Falls

feijoada

samba

capoeira

favela

Yanomami

I recommend spending some time getting familiar with Brazil first, before using these cards. Then go over each of the control cards a few at a time until your child has been introduced to all the terms. Then give them a chance to match the split cards on their own using whatever combination is most appropriate for them (for my 6 year old, that would be the big label and the image). By having to recall the information on their own, they are more likely to remember the terms. Hopefully, they will consider the challenge more like a game than a chore. If they don’t, you can turn the activity into an actual game by flipping all the cards upside down and playing a multi-player memory style matching game, using the control cards for reference to see if they got a match.

This week marks my son’s one year anniversary of homeschooling. We didn’t finish learning about all the cultures in Ancient history that I had planned, but that’s okay. We’ll come back around to it. Before we move on though, I at least want to finish my learning material for Ancient Greece. First, we learned some terminology related to Ancient Greece. Then, we learned about the major gods and goddesses from Greek mythology. This latest installment teaches about some of the most important figures in Ancient Greek history. I’m not actually planning to use these Montessori-inspired cards with my 6 year old son now. They can wait until he’s a little older.

Like my other Montessori-inspired cards, these multi-part cards can be used for independent study or for a memory-style matching game. Younger kids might just want to match the names to the pictures. Older kids might want to match the names to the biographical info. For a real challenge, kids can match all 3 pieces at once, using the control cards to check their answers.

The following important historical figurs from Ancient Grece are included:

Homer

Draco

Sappho

Pythagoras

Cleisthenes

Leonidas

Sophocles

Pericles

Herodotus

Socrates

Thucydides

Hippocrates

Alcibiades

Plato

Aristotle

Philip II

Ptolomy I Soter

Alexander the Great

Euclid

Archimedes

If I were going to use these cards with younger kids, I would probably start with the most famous historical figures (Homer, Socrates, Plato, Alexander the Great…). Older kids can use the entire set of 20 cards to learn about some of the other influential Ancient Greeks. If you use a world history timeline (like the one I made), I also made some little labels that you can cut out and paste into your timeline.

Note that this post is part of a 4-part set on Ancient Greece. The other posts in the set include:

You can’t study ancient history without learning at least a little Greek mythology. The gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece permeated nearly every aspect of Ancient Greek life. If you decide to look in depth into the stories behind these mythological characters, you’ll find that Greek mythology is not always kid-friendly. The stories are filled with violence, blood, and gore. They often have sexual aspects as well. Thankfully, there are several toned-down books that are still fascinating for kids. I haven’t included anything on these cards that I wouldn’t share with my preschooler. However, they contain enough detail to be appropriate for much older students as well.

The full set of cards feature 18 of the most important and well-known gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece. There are SO many famous minor gods and other mythological characters, that I couldn’t include them all in these cards. I may have to create another set at some point to cover some of the ones I’ve missed (like Heracles, Theseus, and Odysseus). Sign up for my newsletter to stay up to date.

The set includes the following Ancient Greek gods and goddesses:

Gaia

Uranus

Cronus

Aphrodite

Zeus

Hera

Poseidon

Hades

Demeter

Hestia

Ares

Apollo

Athena

Hephaestus

Artemis

Hermes

Persephone

Dionysus

As with all of my Montessori-inspired cards, there are several options when it comes to how to use these cards. You could just use the complete control cards with all the information for a quick lesson. You could use the split cards for matching activities or games and have the control cards nearby as a way for the child to check their answers.

If you’re looking for some books to go with this activity, we used the 4 books below. You really only need just one. For younger kids (like maybe 8 or younger), I would recommend the Usborne Greek Myths for Young Children. This is the book that I used the most with my 4 and 6 year olds and they both loved it. For older kids (through high school), my favorite is D’Aulaires Book of Greek Myths. I received this book as a gift when I was 9 years old and I still remember flipping through it in high school and becoming engrossed in the stories. Although it would make a beautiful coffee table book, I didn’t care much for the writing style of National Geographic’s Treasury of Greek Mythology. The Usborne Illustrated Guide to Greek Myths and Legends was a little too dense and textbook-ish for my taste, but it would probably make a good library supplement for older kids.

There is so much to love about Ancient Greece. The art, philosophy, greek mythology, the origins of democracy…if I had to choose a time to go back and visit, Ancient Greece would be a contender. (Of course, I’d prefer to be an elite male, and would rather be someplace like Athens than Sparta.) I made these cards to help my 6 year old learn some of the general terminology related to Ancient Greece. In the future, I plan to get into more specific details regarding the people, places, and events most significant to this period of ancient history.

As with all the cards I make, these ones feature both full informational cards, as well as Montessori-style split cards that are meant to be matched. The “player” can choose from matching the picture to the term plus definition or just the term. Older students can match the term to the definition or try to match all 3 pieces at the same time (picture/word/definition). The child can challenge themselves or play a memory-style matching game with a grown-up or friend.

The full set of cards includes the following Ancient Greece vocabulary:

bull-leaping

beehive tomb

hoplites

labyrinth

If you would like some resources to go with these cards, I recommend looking into the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History and the Kingfisher Atlas of World History. The Usborne book is more of a complete, chronological history, while the Kingfisher Atlas is a beautiful supplement for visual learners. I used both books to find the terms to make these cards. Note that both books have “ancient history” versions, but if you were going to buy them versus checking them out at the library, I recommend finding the world history books as they contain the ancient history pages.

The primary thing I’ve learned in studying Ancient Mesopotamia with my 6 year old is that I’m really glad I don’t live in Ancient Mesopotamia. There doesn’t seem to be anything warm, nurturing, or cradle-like about the cradle of civilization. Ancient Mesopotamian leaders seem to have been predominantly harsh and exacting if not outright cruel and vengeful. I made these Montessori-style, split cards featuring important figures from Ancient Mesopotamian history primarily for myself rather than for my 6 year old. (It’s hard to keep everybody straight!)

I’m sure at some point in the future, we’ll study these people and this era in more depth, but for now, these cards combined with my free, printable Ancient Mesopotamia Definition Cards will give my child a point of reference when it comes to this period of world history. I’m not sure in the long run how much he’ll retain, but when he sees them again in his future, hopefully they won’t be entirely unfamiliar.

We primarily studied this time period using the relevant sections from The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History, which is turning out to be a great book for teaching history to preschool through early elementary aged kids (maybe even older). I may add more people in the future, but for now, this set includes the following Ancient Mesopotamian historical figures:

Gilgamesh

Puabi

Sargon of Akkad

Naram-Sin of Akkad

Gudea

Hammurabi

Ashurnasirpal II

Tiglath Pileser III

Sennacherib

Ashurbanipal

Nebuchadnezzar II

</ul

The self-correcting, Montessori-style cards allow kids to test their own knowledge by trying to match the picture of the historical figure to the name and biographical information. At the suggestion of a reader, I’ve also added the option of matching just the name to the biographical information, so there are lots of different ways to learn. The control cards are provided so that kids can check their answers. As a bonus, I’ve also made small labels to be added to world history timelines for kids who would like to visualize the progression of history. My own free, blank world history timeline can be found here.
