Her approach would work fine with my older kids, but I don't see it working very well with the under-five set in a home setting (does make more sense for day care.) We use timers sometimes for that type of situation.

That's a good point. My 2 big kids actually each have a couple "special" toys that everyone knows they don't have to share, but the vast majority of our toys I expect them to share reasonably. The author's strategy is to have children know that they can have as long a turn as they want up to the entire day. The next morning the child that was waiting will get the first turn. I can see this potentially working as a general policy at a day care center where kids are only there for a few hours and maybe it would work with older kids in one household. I just can't see that working for my family when all my kids are so young. The youngest ones don't fully understand, "You can have your turn tomorrow" (and if they did it would probably make them even more upset). We have a timer that if worst comes to worst, I set it for a few minutes and they know to pass the object of contention over when it beeps.

I agree with you on sleep. I haven't read this book, but I might agree with the author on sharing. We have toys that are family toys that are shared, and toys that belong to a child but are expected to be shared, but then each of my children also has toys they are not required to share. I feel like this has taught them to respect the possessions of other children. Have you ever met an adult who shared everything? I have met several who never share anything (which can be problematic).
