Comments: This book REALLY holds up well. I read it as a child and enjoyed it, but didn’t remember a lot of the details. Then I listened to the audiobook with my kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) and we were all completely enthralled. It is so well-written. The story is captivating. The characters are relatable. It is full of emotion. I honestly am having trouble thinking of a book that our family has enjoyed more.

The story is about 4 siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) who accidentally discover the magical land of Narnia by traveling through an old piece of furniture. The land is ruled by an evil White Witch. One of the children is initially seduced by the White Witch, but in the end good triumphs over evil. With the help of a majestic and noble lion named Aslan as well as their friends in Narnia, the children are able to defeat the evil queen. The battle scenes towards the end are both gripping and moving.

I’m not usually a fan of movies relative to books, but this Disney one is really well done. My entire family enjoyed it. I’m excited to read the rest of the series and watch the other movies as well.

Comments: My son has liked this book for over a year. As a toddler, I think he mostly liked the rhyming. He had the first page memorized from a young age. However, now that he’s 4, despite the simplicity of the story, he’s always interested when I bring this book along to read in our travel bag. I also remember liking this book as a child (as well as a cartoon based on this book). There is something very appealing about Madeline. I’ll definitely admit this book does seem timeless and worthy of the numerous recommendations, but there’s also something very odd about it, almost like it didn’t have an editor. Why are some of the illustrations so detailed and polished and other ones look like rough draft sketches? Also, does anyone else think it’s weird how there are still 12 girls sitting at the dinner table when Madeline is in the hospital?
