It has been a while since I've had a four year old, so I'm having trouble remembering that exact age range! What I would probably do though is first just look at the pictures and talk about them with your kids to get them familiar with the images. Then you can mix up the labels and pictures and have the kids try to match them. If your child is not reading yet, you may have to help them with what each label card says. Lastly, you can play a two player memory style matching game where you lay them upside down and then take turns flipping pairs trying to get a match. To do that, you might need to print them on cardstock so that the image doesn't show through!

The Montessori nomenclature cards for primary kids sound intriguing, and I love the idea of hands-on learning at home. Do you have any tips for introducing these activities to a busy 4-year-old?

Personally, I don't believe in penalizing kids when they feel stuck and need help. I think we should just help them because the goal is more knowledge and skills, not to perform on a test. If they know that we really care about is them understanding and not evaluating them, I think they will be more open to our guidance and know that we are on their side.

I found your point about self-correcting materials fascinating. It makes so much sense that when a child can see their own mistake and fix it, they build confidence instead of feeling judged. Do you have any suggestions for adapting this idea for older kids who might feel frustrated when they get stuck?

The Montessori method’s emphasis on self-correcting materials really resonates with me, especially for math. It transforms abstract numbers into something a child can physically manipulate, which makes mistakes less frustrating and more like discovery.
This is such a great perspective on Montessori. I was pretty skeptical at first too, but reading about the science behind the self-correcting materials really changed my mind. It’s amazing how much kids can learn through hands-on exploration without constant grading or correction.

This is such a great breakdown of how Montessori principles can be adapted at home.
This is such a thoughtful journey into Montessori learning—I really appreciate how you went from skeptic to convert after reading the science behind the method. The idea of child-directed, self-correcting materials is so powerful, especially for building confidence and curiosity at a young age. I’ve found that creating consistent, repeatable visuals for learning activities at home can be a challenge,

Thank you for such an honest and detailed account of your Montessori journey! It's reassuring to read how your initial skepticism turned into genuine belief in the method after diving into Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius. The way you break down the practical, hands-on activities makes the philosophy feel approachable for parents who are completely new to it. Really helpful resource!
