I know I am a total nerd, but planning for the upcoming homeschool year is probably my favorite part of homeschooling. I get a little giddy just thinking about it. I LOVE researching curricula. I love borrowing curricula or looking at samples online so I can see what it is like. Sometimes I even purchase curricula I have no intention of using, just in case I love it and want to change my plans.
As much as I LOVE curricula, it can be overwhelming sometimes, even for me. I don’t want my kids to miss out on anything awesome, but at the same time, I don’t believe school should take the entire day. The less time we spend on structured learning, the better, because that means my kids have more time to just be kids. As a result, in practice, I rarely follow curricula exactly as written. I use curricula to support our goals, while not feeling bound to every last element of it.
Even though we can’t do everything, I have an obsessive need to see everything. That way, I know what we’re missing. Yes, I admit it. I am a curriculum addict. I have examined more than any sane person could justify. However, I’m working really hard not to become a curriculum hoarder. I keep the material, books, and programs that seem outstanding. Whatever I’m not madly in love with, I pass along. I really do want a simplified approach to each homeschool year.
With that in mind, here are my curriculum choices by grade:
