Buying a gift for a 1-year-old can be confusing, because there are tons of toys aimed at this age group (mostly with lots of lights and sounds), but how long are they really enjoyed? “Baby toys” are always the first thing to get demoted to our donation pile. Why? Because the older kids don’t want to play with them and even the 1-year-old would rather play with the older kids’ stuff.
Personally, I prefer toys for 1 year olds that can theoretically be enjoyed for a couple years (which often means buying toys aimed at older kids). I tend toward the more natural, battery-free stuff, but I don’t discount electronic toys if my kids really enjoy them. This isn’t to say my kids haven’t enjoyed some great baby toys. I’ve just tried to pick suggestions that I feel are not only enjoyable, but also economical and long-lasting.
