Now that my kids are getting older, I’m starting to get more excited to play with some of their “toys”. I would still say the predominant focus of my 5 year old is fantasy play. However, they also enjoys playing more complicated games which are fun for me. This list of great gifts for 5 year olds includes items reflecting their wide range of interests.
In addition to fantasy play, my current 5 year old goes through phases where he’ll do the same puzzle over and over again for weeks. He also enjoys outdoor toys, arts and crafts, hands on activities, and learning activities. I try to minimize my kids screen time, especially under the age of 5, but electronics also definitely have wide appeal.
Here are some suggestions for the best gifts for 5 year olds that the kids in my life have enjoyed over long periods of time. Some of these gifts are educational as well, but the primary reason they are recommended is because they are fun. (5 year olds are not well known for their tactful reception of gifts they perceive as “not-fun” like sweaters or bike helmets.)
My hands-down absolute favorite toy for a 5 year olds is Magna-tiles. Unfortunately name brand Magna-tiles are really expensive. Thankfully, the off-brand version are basically indistinguishable. Our family has both and they are all mixed together in one big set.
