I think picture books aimed at kindergarteners might be my absolute favorite type of kids’ book. They can be funny, meaningful, or moving, and my kindergartener is able to pick up on subtleties that he missed as a younger child. Not that I don’t love reading to my baby and preschooler, but what is interesting to a 1 year old or funny to a 3 year old is frequently not that interesting or funny to me. However, what my kindergartener enjoys, I usually enjoy as well. It probably doesn’t hurt that I still mostly select books that I think are worthwhile for him, so we tend to avoid books with potty humor that I’m sure he would also enjoy, but it’s nice that finally, the things I like, I can share with my son, and he likes them too.
