This book might not be for everyone. To fully appreciate this book, kids need to be able to appreciate deadpan humor and slapstick comedy, so I can see some kids being too young for this particular story. However, my 9 and 11 year olds thought it was hilarious. My younger kids were laughing along with their older siblings. The story of an eternally optimistic, joyful stick and his grumpy, unenthusiastic stuffed animal partner is not only creative, but introduces kids to world geography.

My 6 year old just walked by as I had this book open in front of me. He said, “I like that book” and started quoted funny lines from it. This book is a wonderful way to take your kiddos on a trip around the world and introduce them to the different continents. Stick and Huggie’s different take on each of their adventures is hilarious. For example, when they run into pirates, Stick says, “They had us try out their diving board…So much fun!” Huggie says, “WORST trip ever…They made us walk the plank. Now stuffing is coming out of my butt. Wonderful.”
Not all parents might appreciate Huggie’s sarcasm and use of words such as butt. However, my kids all thought it was hysterical from the 4 year old to the 11 year old. What I appreciated most was Stick’s eternally optimistic attitude. I kept finding myself pausing and telling my kids, “Wouldn’t life be amazing if you were all a bunch of Sticks instead of a bunch of Huggies?!” They heartily disagreed and continued to laugh over Huggie’s unamused take on their situation.
The contrast between these two “friends” is stark and endearing. While I love Stick’s upbeat personality, you can’t help but want to give Huggie and hug throughout the book. We all feel like Huggie some days. Nothing goes our way and it’s hard to look on the bright side. I hope there are more upcoming books about this pair’s epic adventures!
