Let’s be honest! Late elementary is when books for kids start to get really good. I still remember being in fifth or sixth grade and reading The Bridge to Terebithia for the first time. That book changed my entire worldview. Up until then, all I knew from stories for kids were happy endings. By late elementary, kids have the maturity to touch on some deeper and more intense topics. Since I have a family with 4 kids, many of my children listened to and enjoyed these stories at even younger ages. Recently we were listening to The Last Cuentista (a beautiful book) and my third grader asked, “Are you sure this book is for kids?” Some of the books our family has enjoyed I’ve avoided including until now, simply because not all kids might be ready for them! Others, my late elementary children just loved too much not to include.
